K9 Neptune, ID #2271, was a North American Police Work Dog Association certified Patrol Dog for the Kent County, MD Sheriff’s Office from December 2002 through April 2004. He was purchased and trained from Castle’s K9 in Mechanicsburg, PA. During this time period, K9 Neptune conducted 72 scans of motor vehicles and open areas for illicit drugs that resulted in 13 arrests for drug violations. Additionally, he was used 22 times for patrol functions that included tracking, evidence searches, building searches, crowd control, and K9 demonstrations. He also assisted in the seizure of $4,500.00. In October 2003, I discovered that K9 Neptune had a severe case of arthritis in his front and rear legs. As a result, K9 Neptune was ultimately retired in April 2004 and replaced with another K9. K9 Neptune was under warranty and replaced with another Patrol K9 at no cost to the Sheriff’s Office, but unless purchased by me, would have been euthanized by the vendor. As a result, I chose to personally purchase K9 Neptune from Castle’s K9. K9 Neptune has been enjoying his retirement with my wife and I since April 2004 without any serious medical issues other than the arthritis, which he has done very well in coping with.
